(180mag) : How did you get into photography? Schooling or training?
(Chique): Interest and my inner character lead me into photography. I had my first contact with photography in school when I was an engineering student in Singapore, but I have not had any schooling or formal training so far. I acquire the knowledge I need from the internet and books.
Before I decided to become a fashion/commercial photographer, I bought a book from amazon.com. It gave me a shortcut toward knowing a thing or two about photography lighting.
(180mag) : What are your areas of specialization? Tell us about that field? Any hints? What do you need to shoot it? For instance, if it's fashion or commercial do you use a team approach?
(Chique): Fashion/commercial Photography. For this industry, I would recommend just jumping in.
Fashion photographers need to have their own individualities and to keep their brain updating.
Whether or not I use a team in my photography depends on the shoot
(180mag) : Were you always interested in these or have you changed your focus?
(Chique): My photography experience began by shooting happy scenes on Singapore steets. Soon I realized what I want to shoot is fashion and I think I can do this only if I am actually in the industry. As a Chinese, I chose to go to Beijing, the culture center of China. I am now applying myself toward increasing the proportion of fashion photography in my business.
(180mag) : Anyone out there you'd like to assist? Who are your photography heros? Who are your inspiration? Mentors?
(Chique): Considering Chinese fashion photographers on active service, I really appreciate Mr. Chen Zhun and Ms. Chen Man's work. Mr. Chen Zhun is very good at telling stories through a series of pictures. He prefers to use soft lighting. On the other hand, Ms. Chen Man prefers hard lighting and cares a lot about the texture on the object's surfaces. She can create a good picture on a very simple background and has good control and application of shadows. More importantly, she has her own great feeling for style.
Helmut Newton is certainly a photography hero for me, but I have a very long list of people and things that inspire me. Several months ago, I met a friend named Adam Bartas from the University of London. He is now in his hometown of Prague, Czech Republic. We often share tips and our experiences on the way.
(180mag) : Are you making a living at photography? Any hints for those starting out on how to make a living?
(Chique): Aye. Literally, to make a living is a matter of life and death. If you can not succeed, you can not survive. When you are touching this bottom line, the wish to live will dominate, and hints are not very helpful. You know yourself and your situation better than anyone else, so don't waste time searching for and reading other guys' hints, just do it.
(180mag) : Who are your clients now?
(Chique): I currently work with: Gramophone China, City Info. and Foto-Video China. I offer my photography services to many enterprises in many different industries, such as fashion dressmakers, makers of GPS navigation instruments for cars, tea pillows, art vases, flooring, mobile phones and other things.
I also shoot covers for video CDs and music textbooks with an entertainment element, for some art/culture companies in Beijing. I shoot Chinese classic furniture and jewellery for
an Asian Export company and a French company. I also do some report photography, such as the release shows for Timberland and DKNY in Beijing.
(180mag) : Who would you like to be shooting for?
(Chique): I would like to be shooting more creative work for fashion designers, using great models such as Alessandra Ambrosio.
(180mag) : What would you like to say to potential clients?
(Chique): Hope we can get effective communication on the basis of trust.
(180mag) : Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
(Chique): Still a fashion/commercial photographer somewhere on the planet.
And should get married and have at least one child.
180 Mag: Any final advice for young photographers?
(Chique): Please square youself with your answer of this question: How far are you willing to go for photography?
(180mag) : How did you get into this subject?
Tell us about these particular shots? Are they personal work? Did they come from other shoots? What do they mean to you?
Where did you find these models / subject matter?
(Chique): This shoot is a special portrait story for Foto-Video China, I was named the photographer for this year. The idea came from a photo by my friend, Adam Bartas, in which the model looks like a chessman.
These shots certainly required a team. Mr. Deng, an editor of the Chinese version of Foto-Video, supervised the operation. Xiao Le,the make-up artist, bought the crosier for the queen and his staff made the clothing for the pawn. Mr. Yeux offered many pieces of advice and assumed some of postprocessing work. Mr. Bona gave action guidance to the model and bought the chess board and pieces together with Mr. Yeux.
I bought the axe in a toy shop and rented the dress for the queen from an advertisement company. I also did some part of the postprocessing work and was the one who held the camera.
Model Li Zheng acted the two characters in the story. The model's expressive force really matters in a story like this one.
Of course we're never completely satisfied with any shoot, but we had a good time working as a team.
